    Robert D. Cardona went to live in the UK in Since then, he has also worked on such British live shows such as The Flaxton Boys, The Four Feathers, Thriller, Fraud Squad, Crime of Passion and Emmerdale. In , Cardona joined Clearwater Features, replacing Ken Turner.

    From to , Cardona co-produced the company's Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends with David Mitton. In , the two developed their own television series about tugboats. Cardona wrote a single episode for the first season; Warrior. His wife and son participated in the production by writing episodes; Sunshine, Pirate and Quarantine.

    Tugs (stylised as TUGS) is a British television series produced by Tugs Ltd., for Television South (TVS) and Clearwater Features Ltd.[1] and first broadcast on ITV from 4 April to 27 June It was created by Robert D. Cardona and David Mitton, who had previously produced the first two series of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends. Set in the Roaring Twenties, the series focuses on the adventures of two anthropomorphizedtugboat fleets, the Star Fleet and the Z-Stacks, who compete against each other in the fictional Bigg City Port: "the biggest harbour in the world".

    The theme tune and incidental music was composed by Junior Campbell and Mike O'Donnell, who also wrote the music for Thomas & Friends (from to ).[2]

    Cardona has been based in the United Kingdom for much of his career. His best-known work is with his working partner David Mitton; their productions include Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, which Cardona produced until (the second series), and Tugs, which ran for 13 episodes.[2]

    Cardona has also worked on other British TV series such as The Flaxton Boys, The Four Feathers, Thriller, Fraud Squad, Crime of Passion, Emmerdale Farm and Virgin of the Secret Service. In the early s, he moved to Canada, where he worked on the children's series Theodore Tugboat, as a director, which served as a continuation of Tugs.
