    Panda's journey from humble origin to pinnacle as doctor

    Dr Ramakanta Panda, who led the 11-member team that successfully performed high-risk heart bypass surgery on Prime Minister Monmohan Singh at AIIMS, New Delhi, on saturday, has had a long journey before reaching the pinnacle in the medical profession.

    Born and brought up in a poor family at Damdarpur in Jajpur district in Orissa, Dr Panda faced a lot of difficulties in continuing his studies during his school days. He travelled 16 km every day from his village to reach Pritipur High School.

    The silver lining in his difficult times was his school headmaster Satish Chandra Das who guided and encouraged him to continue with his education.
