    अग्रणी थियोसोफिस्ट, महिला अधिकारों की समर्थक, लेखक, वक्‍ता एवं भारत-प्रेमी डॉ. एनी बेसेंट का जन्म लंदन शहर में सन् 1847 में हुआ था। उनके अंग्रेज पिता पेशे से डॉक्टर थे और माता एक आदर्श आयरिश महिला थीं। एनी पर अपने माता-पिता के धार्मिक विचारों का गहरा प्रभाव था। युवावस्था में सन् 1867 में उनका विवाह एक युवा पादरी रेवरेंड फ्रैंक से हुआ। 1870 तक वह दो बच्चों की माँ बन चुकी थीं। अंततोगत्वा सन् 1874 में उनका अपने पति से संबंध-विच्छेद हो गया। उनका भारत आगमन सन् 1893 में हुआ। सन् 1906 तक उनका अधिकांश समय वाराणसी में बीता। वे 1907 में थियोसोफिकल सोसाइटी की अध्यक्षा निर्वाचित हुईं। धार्मिक, शैक्षणिक, सामाजिक एवं राजनीतिक क्षेत्र में उन्होंने राष्‍ट्रीय पुनर्जागरण का कार्य प्रारंभ किया। भारत के लिए राजनीतिक स्वतंत्रता आवश्यक है, इसके लिए उन्होंने ‘होमरूल आंदोलन’ संगठित किया।
