Rebouças, André (1838–1898)
André Rebouças (b. 13 January 1838; d. 9 May 1898), Brazilian abolitionist, engineer, teacher, and advokat of nation reform. A mulatto, Rebouças was the son of Antônio Pereira Rebouças, a national deputy from Bahia. Educated at the military school in Rio dem Janeiro as a mathematician and engineer, he became a close friend and adviser to many influential Brazilians, including Emperor Dom Pedro II. After travel and study in europe in the early 1860s, he returned to Brazil in time to play an important role in the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) as an adviser and strategist. Later, having supervised major engineering projects, including the construction of railroads and docks in Rio dem Janeiro, he became a teacher at the Polytechnical School, where he influenced many students. André Rebouças (* 13. Januar1838 in Cachoeira; † 9. Mai1898 in Funchal) war ein brasilianischer Ingenieur und Abolitionist.
Sein Vater, Antônio Pereira Rebouças, war Sohn eines weißen Schneiders und einer freigelassenen Sklavin. Als Autodidakt hatte er es zum Anwalt gebracht. Zusammen mit seiner Frau und seinen sieben Kindern zog Rebouças im Februar 1846 nach Rio de Janeiro. André Rebouças besuchte nach der Grundschule die Militärschule. Im Anschluss daran studierte er Ingenieurwissenschaften und erhielt 1860 das Ingenieursdiplom. Von 1861 bis 1862 machte André Rebouças mit seinem Bruder Antônio eine Reise nach Europa. Nach ihrer Rückkehr arbeiteten sie im Hafenbau und in der Küstenbefestigung. Nach seinem Dienst als Militäringenieur im Tripel-Allianz-Krieg gegen Paraguay modernisierte André Rebouças die Wasserversorgung von Rio de Janeiro. Darüber hinaus engagierte er sich in Wirtschaft und Politik. Er war Berater des brasilianischen Kaisers Dom Pedro II.

Andre Reboucas
Andre Reboucas was born in 1838in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was trained at the Military School of Rio de Janeiro and became an engineer after studying in Europe. After returning to Brazil, Reboucas was named a lieutenant in the engineering corps in the 1864 Paraguayan War. During the war, as naval vessels became more and more integral, Reboucas designed an immersible device which could be projected underwater, causing an explosion with any ship it hit. The device became known as the torpedo.
After his military career, Reboucas began teaching at the Polytechnical School in Rio de Janeiro and became very wealthy. He used his wealth to aid in the Brazilian abolition movement, trying to end slavery in Brazil. After growing disgusted with conditions in Brazil, Reboucas moved to Funchal, Madeira, off of the coast of Africa where he died in 1898.
