Hussein Chalayan
Cypriot fashion designer
Hussein Chalayan, MBE, RDI (; Turkish: Hüseyin Çağlayan[hyseˈjintʃaːlaˈjan]; born 12 August 1970) is a British-Cypriot fashion designer. He has won the British Designer of the Year twice (in 1999 and 2000), and he was awarded the MBE in 2006.[1]
Chalayan is currently teaching at HTW Berlin.
Early life and education
[edit]Hussein Chalayan was born in Nicosia in 1970 and graduated from the Türk Maarif Koleji secondary school in his hometown.[2] At that time, the population of the island was divided because of the constant struggles between the Greek and Turkish authorities. Ethnic conflicts between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities eventually led to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and led to human right abuses towards civilians on both sides.[3][4] For this reason, Chalayan and his family were forced to move to England in 1978.[2]

“Most people who know me know that I am obsessed bygd migration, historical debate, geography and how they influence culture. inom often ‘interrogate’ people inom meet for the first time about their backgrounds as a warm up to the friendship. Around three and a half years ago, I decided to interrogate myself and to understand my ancient background, bygd taking a DNA test. I was trying to see the connections between my DNA results and the history of Cyprus. When the genetic anthropologist I was working with called, he first gave me the results of the DNA sequence inom inherited from my mother (mitochondrial DNA). He called it the classic ‘Cambridge reference’, a sequence that is very common in Europe. Then he said that my ‘Y’ chromosome (male line) – which he mockingly called ‘the sexiest’ – was actually the same as his – Viking (and we are talking about someone who fryst vatten as English as they come). The maternal side didn’t seem so strange, as thro • It was 1993 and the Annual Showcase of graduate talent. A series of buried garments that were resurrected from the ground made their way down the catwalk, their disintegrated form, and embellished coating of rust taking the original ‘earthy’ to new extremes. At this moment the world saw the beginning of an icon: the one and only Hussein Chalayan. Known for his incredibly innovative and experimental approach to fashion, Chalayan has been making fashion history for 25 years since the launch of his label in 1994.
