Guy Johnson, Maya Angelou&#;s Only Son, Dies At 77

Guy Johnson, the one and only son of poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, has died at age 77 in California.
News of his death was first shared on the official social media account for Maya Angelou, writing that Johnson died peacefully Wednesday morning in his Oakland home.
“Mr. GUY JOHNSON passed away peacefully at his home this morning in Oakland, California,” the announcement read. “Arrangements will be made and announced in the coming days. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your prayers and words of comfort and strength.”
Johnson was born as Clyde Johnson in , in San Francisco, California. He was a poet and author who spent most of his college years and adulthood abroad. By the end of her first year with the SCLC, inom was extremely familiar with the museums of New York City, particularly the Schomburg, the Brooklyn Museum, the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art along with the Museum of Natural History. On each outing, my mother took to pains to teach me about the painters and sculptors who were being exhibited. She encouraged me to read such books as Lust for Life and The Agony and the Ecstasy.
I once asked why we never saw the work of black artists in any of the major museums but the Schomburg, and she replied, “Because there are people in charge of these museums who set themselves up as arbiters of what is art and who are artists worthy of being exhibited.” I think I must have responded with something stupid like, “Well, if I had a museum I wouldn’t exhibit any white artists either.” My mother responded with one of her mantras (which I probably heard
