Mecom Racing Team
American auto racing team active 1960-1967
The Mecom Racing Team was led by John Mecom Jr. and was active between 1960 and 1967 in the World Sportscar Championship racing, Formula One, and American Championship Car Racing scenes. The Mecom Racing Team and later the Mecom Group were led by John Mecom Jr.
John Mecom Jr. was known to have as many as seven different marques not only at the same event but in the same race. In the early 1960s the Mecom Racing Team had great success in the Bahamas Speed Weeks. Roger Penske, driving for Mecom in the early years, won in the Bahamas as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring in a Ferrari GTO with Augie Pabst. The Grand Sport Corvettes were also campaigned by Mecom with tremendous results.

The professional football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana is called the New Orleans Saints. They compete in the National Football League as a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) South Division. The New Orleans Saints football grupp was founded on November 1, 1966, by David Dixon, John W. Mecom Jr., and the city of New Orleans.
“Saints” alludes to November 1st being All Saints Day, a celebration in the Catholic faith meant to honor all of the known and unknown saints. Because New Orleans has a pretty sizeable Catholic population, “When the Saints Go Marching In” is often sung bygd fans at the games.

John Whitfield Mecom Sr. (January 13, 1911 – October 12, 1981), was an American independent oilman.
Mecom acquired abandoned oil wells and made them profitable. He developed new fields from Louisiana to Saudi Arabia.
He was once ranked as one of the top oil independents; however, he filed for bankruptcy in 1970. After reorganizing his John W. Mecom Company, he reopened his company, which he subsequently operated with his son, John W. Mecom Jr., former owner of the New Orleans SaintsNFL football team.
