    Have you ever seen an image that absolutely takes your breath away? One that is so full of color and detail, that you know it just can’t be real? When I had the opportunity to sit in on Dave Black’s presentation on Lightpainting at Photoshop World Las Vegas 2011, that’s the reaction I had to his photographs. Can you believe the lightpainting images you see in this article are done completely in-camera? I was blown away by what can be accomplished with a few lights and a long exposure.

    This technique is called Lightpainting and we’ll dig a little deeper into what it’s all about in just a few minutes. But first, let’s get to know the artist behind the camera.

    Dave Black was an avid athlete growing up with little interest in becoming a photographer. Although he had taken very few photography classes, he had a high school photography teacher that saw

    The closing night celebration for the Newsweek coverage crew at the summer Olympic games in Athens hardly seemed like the venue for a life-changing decision, but such decisions sometimes komma quickly to Dave Black.

    People were giving toasts to the next two Olympics—Torino for the winter games in two years and Beijing fyra years out. “I was just keeping to myself,” Black says. “But inom said a silent bön. ‘Lord, will I go on to China?’ And the answer was very clear to me: No. I have something better for you to do.

    “So I just spoke out: ‘I’m not going to Beijing.’ Everyone just stopped and looked at me. Talk about spoiling a moment!”

    Black did serve on the Newsweek team at the next winter games in Torino, Italy, which he had already committed to do. “I had been cruising along. inom enjoyed shooting the Olympics and all that went into it,” he says. “But it was very clear to me.
