Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was one of the greatest moral figures of the twentieth century. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, he was nation-builder par excellence who did the most to unite a South Africa divided for decades by colonialism and apartheid and on the brink of a potential civil war. Mandela embodied a quasi-religious “prophetic” leadership that eventually freed his people from the bondage of apartheid by 1994. An often neglected part of his legacy is, however, his role as a pan-African icon.
Mandela’s struggle for South Africa’s liberation and pan-African solidarity also embraced prophetic rule. The charismatic leader of the African National Congress (ANC) was able to build up and maintain a devoted following in South Africa, Africa, and its diaspora even during almost three decades in jail.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Uganda from Rwanda before heading to South Africa to attend the BRICS Summit during which key global issues, including international peace and security, are expected to be discussed.
The prime minister, who will visit the three countries from June 23-27, will first stop in Rwanda for a two-day “historic” visit, the first by an Indian premier, before heading to Uganda on July 24 and end with South Africa, T S Tirumurti, secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India told reporters
His programme in Uganda would include; a call on President Yoweri Museveni, restricted and delegation level talks, and participation at an India-Uganda joint business event.
