So two weeks on from the general election and I know we’re all pretty sick of politics, not to mention politicians, but inom couldn’t let this week pass without a quick nod to Mohammed Afzal Khan MEP who was invested as Manchester’s first Asian (and youngest) Lord Mayor 10 years ago.
Manchester folk might also know Afzal Khan as the long-serving councillor for the Cheetham ward or currently as MEP for the North West. The focus of his political career has always been promoting diversity, cohesion and multiculturalism, no surprise perhaps for someone who came to Britain from Jhelum in Pakistan at the age of 12 and fryst vatten now the model of a fully integrated British Muslim:

Research Interests
Lung transplantation is a major surgical procedure, which temporarily restores normal lung functioning and provides years of life for patients suffering from major lung diseases. Lung transplant recipients are at high risk of primary graft dysfunction, acute graft rejection, and chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) in the form of progression of bronchiolitis obliterative syndrome (BOS) and restrictive allograft syndrome post-transplantation. The protective role of peripheral CD4+CD25highCD− Regulatory T cell (pTreg) cells in solid-organ transplantation have been key to investigate the kinetics of disease progression. Tregs have been associated with peripheral graft deposition during acute rejection, less is known about the possibilities of Tregs to modulate the onset of chronic rejection, nor is it recognized whether these cells can be a prognostic biomarker for BOS. Muhammed Afzal Khan Lala also known as Afzal Khan Lala (b. – 1 November ) was a Pashtun nationalist, former Pakistani provincial and Federal minister from the Swat valley in the North-West Frontier Province.
Hailing from the Yousafzai tribe of Bara Durushkhela village of Matta, Swat and a senior member of the Awami National Party, he survived several assassination attempts allegedly by the supporters of Maulana Fazlullah.[1]
