Black Composers and Concert Artists
Histories on African American music rarely include the cultural expressions of performers or composers defined as part of concert or classical music. The reason most often cited for this exclusion is that their expressions represent a Western European aesthetic, and, thus, fall outside the cultural and musical framework of Black culture. While this interpretation has merit, it ignores the cultural hybridity embodied in many forms of musical expression considered to be “Black music.” Within the Black concert or Afro-classical aesthetic, artists, performers, and composers expand the palette for what has come to define sonic Blackness. They also provide a form of resistance culture to notions of racial inferiority, and the marginalization of Black America.

The list spans from operatic sopranos active in the first operas of the late 16th century to singers currently performing. Singers who have recorded opera arias or sung them in concert but have never performed in an musikdrama are not included in this list. Singers are sorted bygd their year of birth. This list should not include singers who have never performed in a staged musikdrama with the exception of historic non-white singers who were barred from the opera scen in varying parts of the world due to discrimination prior to the midth century. Prof. Patricia Miller
Patricia Milleris an Internationally acclaimed operatic and concert mezzo-soprano. She is also a highly respected voice teacher and Music Educator. A University Professor, artist-teacher and master class clinician, her talent and commitment to opera education has taken her all over the world. She is Director of Vocal Studies at George Mason University, and serves on the Opera Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Miss Miller has appeared in leading operatic roles with the San Francisco Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, and the Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Denver, Orange County (CA), Los Angeles and New York City opera companies. She made her European debut with the Basel Stadttheater (State Theater) Opera, in Basel, Switzerland, as Isabella in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri, and has since performed in opera and concert in Paris, Geneva, Lyon, Montpellier, Lisbon, Munich, Bonn, Frankfort, Melbourne, Bogota, Calgary, Berlin, Moscow, Kiev, Verona and Tokyo.
