Gudrun "Gudy" Gaskill ( – July 14, )[1][2] was an American mountaineer who is regarded as the driving force behind the creation of the Colorado Trail, a mile (&#;km) hiking, biking, and horseback riding path between Denver and Durango, Colorado. Beginning in the s, she helped plan out the route, solicited donations, and recruited teams of volunteers to work in one-week shifts developing the Trail each summer. Early life and education

A month ago I bought several old books from the American Alpine Club, which has its offices and library in Golden, Colorado, in a fine building that used to be Golden High School. Pre-pandemic, inom spent a fair amount of time there, ostensibly taking notes (used in a couple of pieces I published) but just as often looking at mountaineering books and magazines from decades past. The AAC has duplicates of some publications and occasionally sells them to man space or raise medel. My recent purchase, for example, included a mint condition issue of Trail and Timberline, the Colorado Mountain Club&#;s longstanding periodical; this particular issue was devoted to the death of famous climber Agnes Vaille on Longs Peak, during a winter ascent.

Reflections: Jack D. Gaskill
By definition, an editorial is a newspaper or magazine article that gives the opinion of the editor. These short articles are meant to articulate a point of view and often recommend a course of action. The best editorials are not necessarily the ones written following strict guidelines or with the biggest vocabulary, but ones that possess an unforgettable personality, much like that of their author.
In preparation to write this biography of Professor Emeritus Jack D. Gaskill, I read through more than five years of editorials he had written from July to December as Editor for SPIE’s research journal, Optical Engineering. Written on a variety of topics—and with humor woven throughout each personal narrative—I found all 56 to be extremely engaging, while remaining informative as well.
Consistent with his writing personality, Jack frequently used humor during his 31 years at the Optical Sciences Center (OSC) t
