  • Jan Chozen Bays, Roshi has studied and practiced Zen Buddhism since She received Jukai (lay precepts) in and Tokudo, Priest&#;s Ordination, in from Taizan Maezumi, Roshi. From to she lived at Zen Center of Los Angeles, studying with Maezumi, Roshi and directing the Zen Center&#;s non-profit Medical Clinic. She finished formal koan study in and she was given Dharma transmission (authorization to teach) that same year. Following the death of Maezumi, Roshi in she has continued her training with Shodo Harada, Roshi, a Rinzai Zen teacher and the abbot of Sogen-ji monastery in Japan.

    Since Chozen, Roshi has been the teacher for Zen Community of Oregon. In she helped to found Great Vow Zen Monastery and is the co-abbot. In she also helped found Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple in Portland, Oregon.

    Jan Chozen Bays (born August 9, ), is a Zen teacher, author, mindful eating educator, and pediatrician specializing in work with abused children.

    Jan Chozen Bays was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 9, She grew up in East Greenbush, New York and spent two years in Korea. She received her undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College and earned her medical degree at the University of California at San Diego, specializing in pediatrics.[1]

    Bays began practicing Zen in a group that included Charlotte Joko Beck, Anne Seisen Saunders, and Jerry Shishin Wick in San Diego. She eventually moved to the Zen Center of Los Angeles to study with the Japanese Zen teacher Taizan Maezumi Roshi. She had an extramarital affair with him, which she admitted, which devastated his wife and children. She served as the physician at the Zen Center’s community medical clinic.
